Here’s a reason to put carbs back on your plate. A review has revealed the benefits of so-called ‘resistant starch’ in grains, bananas, cooled potatoes and legumes. It’s a form of starch that’s not digested in the small intestine, so is considered a type of dietary fibre. It was found to control blood sugar levels, support gut health, and enhance feelings of fullness due to increased production of short chain fatty acids (SCFAs). And as SCFAs are linked to a range of benefits, including reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes, that can only be a good thing!
