Your summer energy makeover

Finally on holiday, but can’t relax? Got a couple of days off but your mind is still whirring? Anita Chaudhuri investigates how we can all learn to recharge and take the time to truly rest

Does this sound familiar? For the past few months, you’ve felt like a hamster on a wheel that seems to spin round ever faster.

It’s a constant scramble just to keep up and the only thing sustaining you is the prospect of a sunlounger, gelato and a long, cool Aperol spritz.

Yet, when that longed-for date arrives, and you find yourself gazing at a calm, blue ocean, something peculiar happens. Far from snoozing contentedly in a hammock, or revelling in delicious daydreams, your mind keeps churning. Did you leave the TV plugged in at home? Wasn’t there a news item about the heightened fire risk from doing that? Where did you leave your insurance policy documents? It’s really time to look for a new job… But there are none around now, what with Brexit. What is happening with those EU talks? You reach for your phone…Or, maybe you don’t have the luxury of a proper holiday this year, but you book a weekend away with your beloved, just the two of you. You’ve chosen the boutique hotel, the destination seafood restaurant for dinner and planned every step of your clifftop walk on Google maps. But, when you get there, after being stuck in traffic for hours, it’s raining and you and your partner have a row. You sit in your room, mind churning. You reach for your phone…

‘The trouble with taking time out to recharge and re-energise is that it’s not always as blissful as one might imagine,’ says John Parkin, author of Fuck It: Be At Peace With Life, Just As It Is (Hay House, £8.99). ‘Yes, we know we need to find more space, be more present and contemplate more. And that’s not to say it’s not beneficial. If you take that space, you’re giving the left brain a rest; the bit that likes to plan and strive and micromanage. Doing so gives you mental clarity and allows you to switch to the right brain, which is all about playfulness, creativity and the spiritual, peaceful side.’
