Kate Forbes MSP
Kate Forbes MSP is asking constituents to use water sensibly during the extended and unexpected period of hot weather, which is particularly challenging for croffers and farmers. The MSP for Skye and Lochaber has already been contacted by Highlanders who are having dificulty sourcing enough water for basic washing because their private supply has dried up. Scottish Water has issued advice containing small measures that the public can take to help ensure water supplies to homes and businesses continue despite increased demand. These include using a watering can instead of a hose to water gardens and plants, taking a short shower instead of a bath, and only using washing machines and dishwashers when fully loaded. Some forecasters have said that the hot temperatures, with minimal rainfall are expected to continue. Ms Forbes said: ‘Usually we are complaining about too much water in Scotland as it rains throughout summer. ‘However, this year, the lovely weather means we’ve all got to consider how much water we are using. ‘It’s tough for farmers and croffers in particular who are dependent on local water supplies. All of us can do things a little bit difierently to conserve water for those who need it the most. ‘There are small steps – like using a bucket or a watering can instead of a hose that can make a difierence. ‘I’m certainly not complaining about the glorious sunshine we’ve all been enjoying but it does have implications.
