Nearly 40 per cent of young people living rurally plan to move to urban centres, according to the interim results of a survey launched earlier this year. The Rural Youth Project survey, which also shows that broadband, transport and a social life are the highest priorities for young people living rurally, was initiated by rural and agricultural communications specialists, Jane Craigie Marketing. ‘In Scotland’s Year of Young People, we wanted to find out what matters to young peopleft aged 18 to 28 living and working in rural areas in Scotland,’ says Jane Craigie, who co-founded the project with colleague Rebecca Dawes. ‘There is very little cohesive research of this demographic in Scotland, and yet it’s an integral part of the country’s future rural economy. ‘This prompted us to initiate a project with a three-pronged approach, a mix of serious data gathering and fun activities, to find out what barriers and opportunities are inffuencing young people’s choices. We will share the findings with policy-makers and rural organisations so that they are better informed and can implement feasible strategies to incite and sustain young people in a thriving rural economy.’
The Rural Youth Project combines an online survey with a series of vloggers – young people sharing their stories of rural living - and a Rural Youth Ideas Festival. The findings from the three elements of the project will be used to create an action plan to share with the Scottish Government and industry organisations in the autumn. The project will also identify and support those who show potential to lead and to make change in their own communities. The final results of the survey will be announced at the first Rural Youth Ideas Festival held on a farm near Kinross in August 2018. The festival, which has been fully funded by Rural Perth and Kinross LEADER, will bring together more than 100 participants from Scotland, the UK and across the world for a series of talks and workshops and discussion groups to share knowledge and promote leadership.
