Life skills
is throwing herself into upkeeping
Paula Reed…
This month, Paula tries her hand at tapestry weaving – and gets herself into a bit of a tangle
A few years ago, I found serenity in a cross-stitch kit. I framed the finished article and gifted my ‘tapestry’ to friends. I was hooked. So, four years later, I’m in a classroom at Dovecot Studios in Edinburgh, having signed up for the tapestry weaving course. The day begins with a briefing on what tapestry isn’t. ‘“Tapestry” is as broad a description as “vegetables”,’ explained our teacher Fiona Hutchison, whose own work is exhibited as fine art. ‘Cross stitch is not tapestry. Embroidery is not tapestry. Even the Bayeux tapestry is not tapestry.’
