ARE LOW-CALORIE SWEETENERS UNHEALTHY?

Low-calorie sweeteners get a bad rap, with some people avoiding them for fear they may cause harm. We asked Dr Stacey Lockyer, nutrition scientist at the British Nutrition Foundation, to clear up the concerns

HEALTH EXPERTS ARE continually urging us to drastically cut back on the amount of sugars we eat daily, for the sake of our waistlines and health. The maximum recommended intake for adults is 7tsp added sugar a day (that’s not the sugar in whole fruit or milk), yet on average we’re consuming 15tsp.

Sweeteners are the obvious substitute for sugars and syrups but, according to Action on Sugar, people are suspicious about using them, thinking they’re bad for health and cause weight gain. So let’s take a closer look at the facts…
