50 ways to join the : PLANET DIET

Even small changes can have a positive impact on our health and the environment. Dietitian Juliette Kellow shares daily tweaks that could add years to our lives and help safeguard our future

THERE’S A WAY OF EATING that can boost your health and save the planet, according to a new report by 37 scientists from around the world. The ‘planet diet’ they recommend is projected to prevent around 11 million premature deaths each year by promoting a healthier, mainly plantbased, diet. This way of eating, say the scientists, will also help protect the planet from undesirable environmental effects such as excessive greenhouse gases, over-usage of water and wildlife destruction – all of which are associated with farming, particularly of livestock.

But it’s not the food on our plates that affects Mother Nature. Shopping and food prep habits, how we use appliances and how much we waste all need to be addressed. So which behaviours do we need to change, and how do we know if what’s healthy for us is right for the environment, and vice versa? We’ve summarised what we can all do, from today, in 50 practical tips.

1 SAVE MEAT FOR TREATS

Meat (and dairy) production is responsible for almost 15% of climate-changing greenhouse gases each year. We also know high intakes of red meat, especially processed meat, are linked to bowel cancer. So no surprise that the planet diet cuts red meat to just under 100g a week (that’s two lamb cutlets or around two slices of roast beef) – less than a quarter of the amount eaten by the average Brit.

2 ENJOY PLANT-BASED ‘DAIRY’

Cows are a major producer of methane, a greenhouse gas with far more globalwarming potential than carbon dioxide (dairy cows contribute around a third of all agricultural methane emissions). For this reason, the planet diet recommends limiting milk to 250ml a day. We’re a nation of milk swiggers, so instead of cutting it out, swap some of your daily cow’s milk for unsweetened, calcium-fortified plantbased milks such as soya, which can benefit the planet, while at the same time increasing cholesterol-lowering soya protein and boosting menopause-friendly phytoestrogens.
