What was the fuss about?

THE PRESS HAD A FIELD DAY following the World Health Organization’s (WHO) announcement about the dangers of eating processed and red meat. After assessing 800 studies, WHO concluded eating red meat is ‘probably carcinogenic’ and that processed meat is ‘carcinogenic to humans’, categorising the latter in Group 1 – the same group as smoking and asbestos. The report suggested that for every 50g of processed meat eaten each day, the risk of colorectal (bowel) cancer increased by 18%, and for every 100g of red meat, by 17%.
