Why the rethink?

The advice not to exceed 14 units a week follows revised drinking guidelines from the chief medical officers (CMOs) in the UK, which came into force on 8 January. This revision to the previous guidelines (21 for men and 14 for women, as set in 1995) is the result of more research that shows drinking any alcohol increases the risk of certain cancers. Specifically, having more than 14 units puts both women and men at a higher risk of cancer, such as mouth and throat cancers and breast cancer for women, as well as other major health issues such as liver disease.
