IT’S NOW KNOWN WE’RE AT RISK of 12 types of cancer (only five were pinpointed a decade ago) if we’re overweight, a new review by World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) found. While excess weight is now seen as a higher risk factor than individual foods or nutrients, diet is still incredibly important and alcohol is given a big thumbs-down.

The review now links alcohol to an increased risk of six cancers – one more (stomach cancer) than a decade ago. The other cancers linked to alcohol are bowel (colorectum), breast (both pre- and post-menopause), liver, mouth and throat (pharynx and larynx), oesophagus (squamous cell carcinoma) and stomach. To reach its new blueprint for preventive diet and lifestyle advice, WCRF analysed decades of independent expert evidence-based reviews. Use WCRF’s risk checklist to see how you can lower your risk:
