EXERCISE YOUR body & soul

It’s the ultimate in feelgood fitness – multitasking for a better world. Here’s how to boost your karma through exercise. By Hannah Ebelthite

WHAT IS IT? The Good Gym started life in 2008 as a group of runners frustrated with the concept of the gym, which they saw as a waste of energy and human potential. Instead, they wanted to ‘do good while getting fit’. The pilot project started in London’s Tower Hamlets with members combining running with physical tasks that help the local community, for an all-round workout and feelgood boost.

WHAT WOULD I BE DOING? Good Gym-ers respond to community needs, but typical workouts include ‘mission runs’, where you run to help a local older person with a one-off task; ‘coach runs’, where you commit to a regular run to visit an isolated older person; or ‘group runs’, where you run with others to a certain location to help with a community project, such as decorating or gardening. Projects are often commissioned by local authorities and the NHS.
