Its creator, German-born Joseph Pilates, taught the method in his New York studio in the 1920s after developing the technique to help strengthen his body following rickets as a child and to help with asthma. Having made the connection between physical and mental health, Pilates borrowed from gymnastics, boxing and wrestling to devise a series of exercises that are performed in sequence on a mat.
