FIT to the CORE

The all-round benefits of Pilates

Tiny but powerful moves work deeply to help you tone up and build core strength. If you’ve got muscles as yet undiscovered, you’ll be surprised how a few weeks of classes can transform your fitness and benefit your general health

FOR A DECEPTIVELY GENTLE set of movements, Pilates is a powerful form of exercise. It can help develop your strength, flexibility, balance, posture and coordination.

Its creator, German-born Joseph Pilates, taught the method in his New York studio in the 1920s after developing the technique to help strengthen his body following rickets as a child and to help with asthma. Having made the connection between physical and mental health, Pilates borrowed from gymnastics, boxing and wrestling to devise a series of exercises that are performed in sequence on a mat.

And anyone can do it. ‘Pilates is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels – it has as much to offer complete beginners as elite athletes,’ says Lynne Robinson, founder of the Body Control Pilates method.
