PHOTOS HIGHLIGHT UNSUNG SUTTON HOO HEROES
Hundreds of photographs documenting the excavation of Sutton Hoo in 1939 have been digitised and made available online for the first time. The rare pictures, captured by amateur photographers Mercie Lack and Barbara Wagstaff, were originally deposited at the Sutton Hoo visitor centre in 2009, but have now been preserved and catalogued by the National Trust for posterity. As well as shedding light on how the Anglo-Saxon burial site was unearthed, the collection also boasts the world’s oldest-known colour photographs of a major archaeological dig. To view the images, as well as Lack and Wagstaff’s notes, visit nationaltrustcollections.org.uk.
