Mountainside monastery

Tucked away on the bank of the Kura River in Georgia is a cave monastery called Vardzia. The architectural marvel was carved from the rock of Mount Erusheti during the early 12th century. Hundreds of hand-carved caves reach 500 metres high over 13 tiers. Vardzia was originally constructed as a military fortress, but was later repurposed as a monastery.
