An illustration of known astrocytes in the brain
Scientists have identified a neverbefore-seen type of cell that may help heal brain damage, at least in mice. The researchers discovered a unique kind of astrocyte, a star-shaped cell that supports communication between brain cells, or neurons, and keeps them healthy by stabilising the brain’s protective barrier and regulating neurons’ balances of charged particles and signalling molecules.
