VEGETARIANS were once considered pale and pasty individuals, yet a new study conforms nothing could be further from the truth. Despite many recent studies confirming health benefits of meat-free diets, few have assessed the impact of vegetarianism on athletic performance.
Veggie power: female vegetarians had a higher VO2 max than meat eaters
So, researchers from Arizona State University looked into that in a trial that compared 27 vegetarian and 43 omnivore elite adult endurance athletes.
Participants completed a VO2 max test on a treadmill and underwent strength tests while performing leg extensions in the gym. They also filled in detailed seven-day food diaries, which revealed the vegetarians consumed less total protein than the meat-eaters but that there was no adverse effect in terms of performance. In fact, the female vegetarians had a 13% greater VO2 max score than the meat-eating women.
“This study suggests that following a vegetarian diet may adequately support strength and respiratory fitness development, and may even be advantageous for supporting respiratory fitness,” concluded the researchers in the journal Nutrients.
