IT’S fair to say we haven’t seen much of the sun so far this summer, but with a heatwave predicted we turn our attention to the issue of sun protection, or rather the lack of it, among athletes. Before your eyes glaze over, as mine did for decades, let me tell you a cautionary tale.
Last summer I underwent surgery to remove a Basal Cell Carcinoma, a malignant but non melanoma form of cancer, from the side of my nose. Digging a deep, 5p-sized hole in my face, my surgeon told me that it was almost certainly a result of my years spent running without applying sufficient SPF.
