Words Tim Heap
If you’re looking for the most gay friendly capital city in Europe, look no further than Madrid. With 3.5 million people attending the city’s World Pride in 2017, it takes the top spot for the most attended LGBT+ event, plus it is home to half a million LGBT+ citizens (about 15 per cent of the population). On top of that, it has more than 200 LGBT-specific venues.
Indeed, as a whole, Spain has been a progressive country for gay people since the 1990s, when it brought in anti-discrimination and hate crime laws, and in 2005 it became the fourth country (one day after Canada) to offer full marriage equality. Not bad for a country that was ruled by a fascist dictatorship until 1975.
