Grey’s Anatomy has a special place in my heart. When I’m hungover and need an emergency purging of emotion, I’ll YouTube one of the US medical drama’s many gutwrenching finales. I still haven’t forgiven the show’s creator Shonda Rhimes for the fate that befell my beloved Danny Duquette way back when – long-time fans will know what I’m banging on about. (Whatever happened to my Shonda-shaped voodoo doll, for that matter?)

The series has even given me a funeral song option; Greg Laswell’s very on-the-nose Of I Go, tussling for top spot against Feed the Birds (Tuppence A Bag) from Mary Poppins.

Admittedly, I’ve scrubbed in and out of Grey’s since its superlative early days, but I checked back into season 15 last year when the smouldering Alex Landi joined the ranks at the fictional Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital as orthopedic expert, Dr Nico Kim. The half-Korean-half-Italian actor made history from the get-go as his character is the first-ever openly gay – not to mention first Asian – male surgeon in the show. On top of that, Alex is so damn cute he’ll make your heart skip a beat. It was no surprise then that I jumped at the chance to interview the TV heartthrob, who made a splash during our cover photoshoot on the rooftop of the swish Andaz West Hollywood hotel in Los Angeles. There happened to be a swimming pool, it was hot and we thought it’d be a shame if Alex didn’t take full advantage of the amenities. Note to Grey’s producers: he needs to be topless more.
