DEAF ENDLING / BANDCAMP
★★★★☆
Bristol five-piece Lespectre have served up one of the best debuts of 2020 with this opening collection of finely-honed ethereal songcraft. Originally conceived back in 2018 as a songwriting project for guitarist/producer Tom Hackwell and drummer Max Perry, Lespectre soon reconfigured themselves as a full-band affair. It’s a move that pays off on an album that’s at times delicate and beatific, at others, bold and bristling. The somnambulant waltz of opener Sleep, While I rests on easy-going ticking beats and guitarist Gary Walker’s hazy, layered guitar FX.
Obliquely Serenely is a gem, gliding along on retro synths and showcasing fine vocal interplay between Hackwell and keyboardist/violinist Becky Leach. And they repeat that dual singer dynamic on the equally fine If, On A Winter’s Night. Amid the lilting atmospherics, they’re not afraid of straight-ahead, hook-laden pop - the wry Impossible makes use of Perry’s encyclopedic knowledge of the great philosophers while the chiming Thirty Fathoms Deep comes up for air to build to a crashing earworm chorus. Making the most of the timehonoured quiet-loud dynamic, Heavily Edited also whips itself up into a fizzing maelstrom coda. A dream debut, indeed.
