THE PLOT DIGESTED
To avenge the death of Dr No, criminal organisation Spectre uses a Soviet decoding machine and a beautiful woman to entice agent James Bond (Sean Connery) to Istanbul… and perhaps to his doom.
WHY THIS FILM?
This is a fascinating artefact and arguably the best Bond film of them all. None of the others captures the books’ sense of perverse glamour quite so faithfully, nor their libidinous cruelty. It could be argued that if the films hadn’t lightened up a bit, they wouldn’t have become the phenomenon we know today. The plot is sophisticated, the fight scenes are stunning and what a villain! A thriller’s quality increases in line with the fearsomeness of its baddie, and Robert Shaw’s Red Grant remains one of the Bond canon’s best (or worst) ever.
