Last year, Captain Jack Harkness returned to an alien-occupied Cardiff for a new series of Torchwood.

Aliens Among Us was conceived as the Doctor Who spin-off’s official fifth season – a present-day continuation of the TV show (2006-11), bringing back old characters and introducing new ones, all developed with the input of series creator Russell T Davies. And it ended with a cliffhanger.

“Yvonne Hartman was about to form an alliance with the city’s alien occupiers and take control of Cardiff, Jack had rescued Gwen, Orr was turning into some kind of angel, and Mr Colchester – having been shot, stabbed, blinded, and eaten – was feeling a little unwell,” producer James Goss reminds us. “And then ‘God’ turned up.”

A new 12-episode season, subtitled God Among Us, begins in October. “This time around the stories focus more on the team,” says James. “The audience seemed to really respond to the new characters so we’re spending more time with them – lovable Orr, grumpy Mr Colchester and his husband, the scheming Yvonne, the fascinating Ng, the horrid Tyler and, of course, Jack. They’re an odd and broken bunch, and the cast are so good together.
