Handbots advance through the gallery in The Girl Who Waited (2011).

The Handbots in the 2011 story The Girl Who Waited were first suggested to writer Tom MacRae by former Doctor Who Magazine editor Clayton Hickman – at least, indirectly.

“The first time I met Clay”, says Tom, “I was working on my Cyberman episodes” – that is, Rise of the Cybermen and The Age of Steel (2006). “We were talking about the very first Cyberman story [The Tenth Planet, 1966] and he said he’d always been creeped out by them having human hands. So I tried to have that in my Cyberman episodes. There was a bit where the machine converting people into Cybermen had an emergency shutdown, so some conversions weren’t quite finished. And the Doctor found this Cyberman, but with Jackie Tyler’s human hands…
