As the director of two stories that pitted the Twelfth Doctor against mechanical adversaries, Paul Murphy has first-hand experience of the challenges posed by the series’ robots.
One of the mechanical knights in Robot of Sherwood (2014), directed by Paul Murphy (top).

“Doctor Who is a busy show”, says Paul Murphy, looking back on his time directing two episodes from the 2014 series – Robot of Sherwood and The Caretaker. “You arrive for a day’s shooting and it hits you like a train every morning, and it doesn’t stop until you wrap. Then you go home and you’re planning for the next day. It’s not an easy shoot.”

Following several years as a lecturer at Salford University, where he directed over 15 short films (“essentially I taught myself how to direct single-camera, and developed as an actor’s director”), Murphy made the jump to directing television in 2002. His many credits include Brookside, Casualty, Waterloo Road, Death in Paradise and the comedy Trollied. However, it was a different directing assignment that brought him to the attention of the Doctor Who team.
