If you were worried that working for Marvel might have dragged lo-fi weirdmeisters Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead into the mainstream, Something In The Dirt is here to disabuse you of that notion. Rebounding with their most unapologetically batshit flight-of-fancy yet, this is a tale of two doofuses (Benson and Moorhead) who are inspired by a floating ashtray to document evidence of the paranormal. It’s no simple ghost hunt, but rather a trippy concoction that includes electromagnetism, a cult based on triangles, and a cupboard with a penchant for Beethoven. The latter half is occasionally overburdened by the weight of its own ideas, but this is an audacious, ambiguous head-trip wrapped in musings about the human condition, and welcome proof that the pair haven’t gone fully respectable just yet.
