You may not have consciously clocked the EATWELL PLATE on the NHS Choices website, but it was designed to set out the nation’s healthy daily diet. It hadn’t changed since it was introduced in 2007. Until last month!
The Plate has been replaced with the user-friendly EATWELL GUIDE. This sets out simple messages and slightly amended proportions for the food groups (no longer shown with a knife and fork, as people wrongly assumed they had to eat the food groups in those proportions at every meal). Find the amendments at healthyfood.co.uk/blog. The other changes? HIGH-FAT and HIGH-SUGAR foods now sit outside the guidelines, and should be eaten infrequently and in small amounts; plus a very small section of UNSATURATED OILS and lower-fat spreads are included.
