Poaching for ivory has become a serious problem, but perhaps there is now cause for hope. The US and China are making bold efforts to fight illegal ivory trafficking. When Xi Jinping visited | America in September, the two presidents agreed to eventually halt their respective trades. Individual US states have begun to do their share too: lawmakers in Delaware, Washington and Illinois plan to ban the import and sale of ivory products, and New York, New Jersey and California have also cracked down. As Dr Patrick Bergin, CEO of AWF, explains: “Increasingly, government officials are willing to do all that’s necessary to prevent this senseless killing. We have already seen a public commitment from the world’s two largest economies to bring an end to the poaching crisis, which is decimating up to 35,000 African elephants each year. Political will is necessary if we are to fully eradicate the illegal trade in ivory.”
