IF YOU ARE AFTER A RACE THAT’S AS MUCH ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE AS THE RUNNING ITSELF, LOOK NO FURTHER THAN THE BRUTALLY BRILLIANT MAVERICK X SERIES SNOWDONIA

The event offers races of 42K, 23K and 17K on the highest mountain in Wales. They all hurt
Coffee, deck chairs and music. The start line of the Maverick inov-8 X Series Snowdonia felt like a ski village: chilled and friendly, mixed with a healthy dose of nervous excitement. Small wonder as this event offers three distances, 17K, 23K and 42K, all with a lot of ascent. I’d entered the middle distance, with a climb of 1,085m, approximately the height of 236 doubledecker buses stacked on top of each other.
But the beautiful setting, on the banks of glacial lake Llyn Padarn in Llanberis helped take my mind off things. The mountains were etched against a blue sky, the leaves golden in the early autumn sunshine.
That and the fact I had 20 of my fellow runners from around the UK sharing the experience. After registration, and a quick safety briefing, we were off.
