Wherever you are at the beginning of your running journey – or maybe running is already part of your life – there are questions we all find ourselves asking over and over again. DO I NEED TO BUY EXPENSIVE SHOES?
Wearing the right shoes for running is important, so heading to a running shop for advice on shoes is a great idea. Shop staff will test your running style by using gait analysis and an expert will monitor the way your body and feet move, and be able to offer advice on what sort of shoes suit your needs. You need to buy a shoe that will best support you and prevent injuries. For example, if you have a high arch, you’ll need a shoe with arch support. Remember, the more money you spend on a shoe doesn’t necessarily mean it will be better, so do your research. If you can’t get to a running shop, there’s plenty of information online and many running shoe websites offer tips and advice, and a good range from which to pick.
WHERE SHOULD I RUN FIRST?
Be sensible and keep your first runs flat with gentle terrain. Allowing your feet and body to get used to the idea of running is vital, so keeping it simple would be a great introduction. For your very first runs, a good idea is to run an out-and-back route from home, so you can easily turn back whenever you’ve had enough. Make sure you’re running somewhere safe, with streetlights for darker mornings and nights.
WHAT DO I NEED TO WEAR ON A RUN?
Something comfortable! We could list a whole host of recommended clothing, but it’s really whatever feels right when you’re running – and layers that are suitable for the weather. Something light, nothing that will make you too hot and sweaty, and nothing overly tight. On longer runs, packing a warm layer is a great idea and a waterproof jacket is useful too. A headband to keep your ears and head warm can be good in winter as well as a pair of light gloves. One of the best purchases you can make is a pair of running socks that will keep you blister free.
