Generally speaking, I try to use this space to jolly everyone up, and nudge you along in your running careers. So when I mention cancer, I’ve got a feeling it might bring you up a bit short. That’s not to say I shan’t be nudging you along, of course, but right now I want us to think about our running more holistically, in terms of its ability to create waves of positivity just when we need it most.
The thing is that if we’re living with cancer, there can be very little guidance about how to support and strengthen our bodies and our mental health during and after treatment. This was something I’d been aware of for some time, so I can’t tell you what a great pleasure it was to talk, on the podcast, to Lucy Gossage from Move charity.
Lucy is an oncologist, and also the co-founder of 5K Your Way, an initiative from Move that we can fully support at Women’s Running (she’s also an astonishingly talented triathlete too – she’s a bit of a marvel). What she was keen to explain to me then, and what our own Dr Juliet McGrattan explores on P82, is to debunk the myth that ‘rest is best’ during cancer treatment.
