Planning your first race abroad means that, alongside regular training, there are logistics to consider. Races create a huge influx of tourism; approximately 500,000 spectators line the street in Boston to watch the annual event, meaning it can be extra difficult to secure accommodation or grab your pre-race pasta. Plus, the day before or after your first marathon is not the time to be sightseeing, no matter how many food delicacies you can consume along the way Importantly, marathon running leaves a significant carbon footprint regarding CO2 emissions. Atransatlantic flight to New York emits 3.5 tonnes of CO2; to give this some context, an average annual household in the UK emits 8.1 tonnes in a whole year. Why not instead use your first marathon as a way to support a local club event?
