“I thought, I’ll just carry on, I’m enjoying it so I’ll keep going. I’ll do it tonight. No pressure, no races. Lovely!”
It’s funny to hear people ask me how I got into running because I still don’t really believe I’m a runner. But I am – clearly! I’m 40 soon and just before my 30th birthday I decided I wanted to start running. It was always something I’d seen other people do and was quite envious of but never done myself. A friend I worked with was getting married the following year and wanted to get fit so we did it together.
We signed up for a 10K and trained together and I was amazed at how quickly you can go from not being able to run at all to running. And then, in fairly short order, managing a 10K. We soon signed up for a half marathon and did that too!
It all sounds great, but actually I hadn’t been bitten by the bug at all. I stopped running after that half marathon because I actually hadn’t enjoyed it at all. It was addictive to see the progress I had made, but afterwards I was just relieved it was over, because of the intensity of the training. So for the next 10 years, I ran only sporadically. I knew there was no other fitness that made me feel as good as I did after a run, but I never went out to actually enjoy it.
