Many of us start our onions of either by sowing seeds very early in the year or planting onion sets immature little bulbs in March. However, now is a good time to start thinking about growing this versatile veg for the earliest harvests next season.
Providing your soil is fairly well drained and not too wet or waterlogged over winter, you should be able to grow onions successfully. You will need to choose the right varieties for this and the seed catalogues and garden centres will start to stock the sets about now, giving you a choice of some cracking varieties for planting next month. Alternatively you can grow your crop starting in August using your packet of Senshyu Yellow seeds that come free with this issue.
