WAKEFIELD’S WOES were worsened in France by a comprehensive defeat to Catalans Dragons, giving them their 13th straight loss in Super League this season.
Some brave first-half resistance gave the 300-or-so away supporters in the Puig Aubert Stand something to shout about but the mountain to climb to avoid relegation just got a little steeper on a hot and humid Friday night in Perpignan.
The reaction of Catalans’ coach Steve McNamara revealed the gulf between the two sides when he said after the game, “I’m happy, but it wasn’t perfect, we’ve had a difficult week since the Warrington game.
“We lost a lot of energy after that and it was difficult to recuperate but we were good in spells tonight, so I’m pleased after a difficult week.
“We were just okay; we conceded only one try but we had little intent. We will need a much better approach against a very good Wigan team next week in the Magic Round.”
