DIVISION ONE
STANNINGLEY sealed survival on the last day of the regular season with a 22-12 home verdict over already-promoted LEIGH MINERS RANGERS, who had won the fixture at Twist Lane 36-18 and who travelled over the Pennines seeking a fourth successive victory.
The Leeds outfit really needed, as it transpired, to prevail against the Miners as their rivals in the battle to avoid joining Skirlaugh in being relegated -Hull Dockers and Clock Face Miners – both won.
In the event, Stanningley have retained their status through a superior points difference.
Keenan Dyer-Dixon, who closed with a hat-trick, crossed twice in the first ten minutes for the hosts, Ryan Taylor adding both goals.
Matt Parkes responded to peg Stanningley back to 12-4 at half-time, but Jack Sykes’ touchdown two minutes after the resumption, Taylor again improving, helped secure an 18-4 lead.
A quick brace by the Miners’ Marco Williamson got Rangers back into the issue but crucially the visitors – who would have been on level terms at that stage if all their tries had been converted – failed with all their shots at goal.
