Readily available cloud storage and wireless data flows means we’re starting to forget what it’s like to copy files from one device to another via a USB cable. Still, once in a while a smartphone storage may be running low on free space, and that means there’s a need to copy media contents to a Linux machine. When you connect an Android device to a PC, it’s detected not as a mass storage, but as an MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) device. Generally, MTP devices cause sporadic troubles with Linux, depending on the device and the corresponding software on the Linux machine. If you feel like the latter is unstable and sometimes fails to show your phone’s data in Nautilus/ Dolphin/whatever, try Android File Transfer for Linux (AFTL). This is a standalone application with its own MTP implementation. It’s robust, reliable and also warmly welcomed in cases where a minimal or truncated Linux desktop can’t handle MTP devices.
