Chinese RISC
I’m intrigued by all the coverage about RISC-V. I’m also a bit concerned. 1) Most of the laptops reviewed so far in LXF that have that architecture use system-on-achip processors. 2) Most if not all such chips are made in China. Am I worried that opening GIMP will cause it to send a report to Beijing? No, not yet. Still, is anyone at Linux Format aware of any efforts to produce RISC-V processors either in Europe or in the US?

Neil says… I think there is great interest in RISC-V in China because it’s open technology that can’t suddenly be sanctioned by the West. Established Western companies have less interest as they can’t control production nor include their own blackbox blobs that could be beaming your data to the NSA. Not that doesn’t happen anyway thanks to the Five Eyes…
