Head Turner

TURNER PRIZE

INSTALLATION: TAI SHANI, DC SEMIRAMIS, 2019, TURNER PRIZE 2019 AT TURNER CONTEMPORARY PHOTOGRAPH: DAVID LEVENE.

Call it Turner squared or even Turner cubed: the headline-generating art prize named after JMW Turner will be hosted for the first time at Margate’s Turner Contemporary, just as the great painter is set to become the new face of the £20 note in February. If it isn’t really the season to bring bucket and spade to the Kent seaside, you’ll still find a winter festival at revived amusement park Dreamland Margate, and of course the four shortlisted artists’ works at the town’s big-draw gallery, including Tai Shani’s sci-fi imaginings of a city built by women (pictured). The winner will be announced on 3 December.
