New kid on the block

HOTEL OPENING

PHOTOGRAPHS: ROBERT RIEGER, HAYDON PERRIOR

Here at Lonely Planet towers in Southwark, we’ve watched with interest as a new building has sprouted from the ground opposite our office over the last couple of years. The handsome pale-brick block contains the Hoxton Southwark, and the hotel has now opened its doors (lobby bar pictured top). The latest addition to a small chain that stretches from Amsterdam to LA, Hoxton Southwark adds a new layer of slick to our rapidly changing South London neighbourhood. Rooms (pictured centre) mix the industrial (concrete ceilings, Crittall windows and exposed pipework) with the domestic (mid-centurystyle furniture, velvet headboards and myriad individual artworks) to stylish effect. The illustrated maps in each are a nice touch, giving Hoxton Hotel’s recommendations in the area. The bar and bistro-style Albie restaurant mean the ground floor is always buzzing, though you’ll want to head to the rooftop seafood restaurant, Seabird, to see just how quickly this part of London is evolving.
