Turn FileVault on today
DOES YOUR MAC have a T2 or Apple silicon chip, start up from its internal SSD, and isn’t used as a server? Then it should have FileVault turned on. Unlike in older Macs, these newer models encrypt the entire contents of their Data volume, anyway; FileVault simply puts you in charge of who gets to decrypt and access your files.
It comes at no cost, there’s no overhead, and you don’t need to use a long semi–random password; just a login password that’s unlikely to be guessed. With FileVault enabled, you can have complete confidence that should anyone get hold of your Mac somehow, they won’t get any of the files in its internal SSD.
