Could Macs get CrowdStruck?
NO MACS WERE affected in July’s CrowdStrike catastrophe because the update that caused it was only for Windows. Even if a similar defective file had been distributed to Macs, the chances of it causing as much damage would have been much lower.
For the last few years, Apple has been pushing developers to move away from kernel extensions because of this type of problem. As they run in the highly privileged world of the kernel, when anything goes wrong with them, it’s likely to cause a kernel panic —the cause of Windows’ Blue Screen of Death. CrowdStrike for macOS therefore uses a system extension, which shouldn’t be capable of causing the same chaos.
