SERPENT OMEGA
CHERYL CARTER
II
ICONS CREATING EVIL ART
Sludge-laden Swedes with more perseverance than ideas
Serpent Omega’s creatively titled second full-length is a curious mix of heavy metal, doom and sludge. II comes screaming out of the gate thanks to the vocal approach of Pia Stjärnvind, which boosts Serpent Omega’s sound via guttural roars, high-pitched shouts and the occasional clean line. This adds variation to a record that, musically, sometimes verges on the repetitive. All eight minutes of Rivers Of Reversed certainly aren’t required when the chorus is run through more times than you can count. It would be more powerful at half the time and this is the biggest downfall of II, which would be all the more striking with a bit more focus.
