Notes from the Workshop
DAVE LOWERY’S TOP TIPS
OVER THE FENCE
Very lucky am I, in as much as my wife has her own hobbies and usually, because of that, a lot of my tools and glues seem to disappear into the unknown gloom of her workshop. However, just occasionally, I see something in her workshop and the old light bulb goes on in the attic, as I think ‘I could use these’. And it is a few of these items I can share with you.
The application of transfers to very undulating surfaces, such as the side of an ‘O’ gauge Class 66 with its corrugated bodysides, can be challenging. I have used the excellent Micro Sol and Micro Set decal setting and softening solutions, which work excellently, as directed by John Peck of Precision Labels. I use Micro Set on the body first and float the transfer onto it. This softens the decal from beneath and, by using various soft applicators, cotton buds or bits of sponge, we push the transfer deep into the grooves. Then, just as the decal begins to dry out, the Micro Sol is applied to finally make the transfer grab.
