-text of New York punk, this suitably squalid heroin anthem originated with Dee Dee Ramone before entering Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers’ repertoire via Richard Hell. Not the most glamorous evocation of the junkie life: “Everything is in the pawn shop,” Thunders yowls. Great song, though.

If Spacemen 3’s original had been a little coy about the chemical underpinnings of their Revolution, the ever-cutting Mudhoney’s cover ramped up the subtext with new lyrics about methadone clinics, blackened spoons and “a morphine suppository”. Also ramped up: the song’s Stooges-y throb, in the sweet spot between dronerock and grunge.
