IN THE 1970s the Staples Jr Singers spent every weekend celebrating their Lord at churches and talent competitions all across the Bible belt. Teenage members of the Brown family from Aberdeen, Mississippi (the group named themselves after Pops, Mavis and co., their idols but not their relatives), the Singers recorded their 1975 debut album When Do We Get Paid in a pokey studio in Tupelo. Its 12 funky, soulful devotionals were something special, but the group could only afford to press 500 copies, which they sold at concerts or to friends and neighbours – hardly a path to stardom.
