WE RECEIVED A GOOD LETTER THIS month from Jeff Ash in Wisconsin, admiring how the stories we tell in MOJO frequently intertwine with one another. Plenty of artists we cover have an air of the Lone Genius about them. But it doesn’t take much effort to see beyond the myths and locate them in a vast network of collaborators, kindred spirits, disciples, influences, and unlikely connections.
Sometimes, we anticipate these links. For our Paul Weller feature, we spoke not just to Weller, but to the illustrious guests who co-wrote songs with him for his new album, among them Noel Gallagher and Suggs. “On day one of our working together I said, Well, it’s only music,” Suggs tells us. “And the phone went silent. To Paul, music really is the most important thing in the world.”
Elsewhere, threads come together in more unexpected ways. Jane Fonda remembers hosting The Byrds. John Grant reveals his table tennis sessions with Grace Jones. Dylan’s bassist Tony Garnier makes a cameo in our Rising section for new artists. Alongside a characteristically frank and thoughtful Pete Townshend interview, David Gilmour calls his old sparring partner “so nice and encouraging”. And then, the spectacularly well-connected Questlove provides the issue’s biggest curveball when he casually mentions a recent phone call with Townshend. Which producer did The Roots’ super-drummer and The Who’s arch-conceptualist nerd out about? Perhaps we’ll save that one for page 31…
