Britain’s railways had undergone massive changes since Nationalisation in 1948. The upheavals were marked particularly by the move from steam engines to diesel and electric traction and a severe rationalisation of the system. The need for the latter dictated by both declining usage and the need to stem mounting financial losses.
At first glance, then, the 1970s might be viewed by some as a time of stagnation, but as we shall see as we chart the progress of the decade year by year, the industry was putting in place a new set of firm foundations that would enable it to re-emerge rapidly in the following decades as an essential mode of transport for the masses.
