Focus racking
Master this must-have technique for better stills and video
Rapid refocus Being able to quickly shift focus between objects at different distances is a key skill for both stills and video. Understanding your lens functions is also critical
The rack-focus method has been a staple of the videography world for decades. With video content creation on the rise, it has become an essential technique to add to any camera user’s arsenal. Importantly though, it is also useful for stills photographers using the latest mirrorless lenses. Newer optics work entirely ‘by-wire’, meaning operation of the focus ring sends signals to a motor to drive element movement. This takes some getting used to, so practising precise focus movement with your new mirrorless lenses is something you should try this year.
