The sun is out, summer is here, and many aquarists will be thinking of a native marine tank. But what are the pitfalls in racing off to the beach and just collecting?
Nathan Hill is Practical Fishkeeping magazine’s editor, biotope fancier and aquascape dabbler, who looks forward to moving to his new home and setting up a fish house.
WHEN I was growing up, I lived on a beach, just the shortest stroll away from the rockpools that would form at low tide. My youth was shaped by summers spent arm-deep in icy brine, chasing stranded flatfish in the temporary ponds. In later life, I went on to work at the public aquarium back in my hometown, which dealt exclusively in locally sourced species. Natives and I have history together.
