THE DOLL
LISTEN TO THE SILENCE (BEGGARS BANQUET, 1979)
If Prog readers know The Doll at all, it’s probably because of their one hit single, Desire Me, which reached No.28 in the UK charts in January 1979. It may have given the impression the London band were no more than Blondie wannabes but that’s a totally unfair and misguided description.
The Doll were formed in late ’77 with a line-up of Marion Valentine (vocals, guitar), Adonis Yianni (keyboards), Christos Yianni (bass) and Mario Watts (drums). They were signed to Beggars Banquet, Desire Me was their second single. Valentine and Christos Yianni revamped the line-up with the addition of Jamie West-Oram (lead guitar), Denis Haines (keyboards) and Paul Turner (drums). This was the version of the band who recorded their sole album, Listen To The Silence, put out later in 1979.
